Hydroxyapatite Coatings on Calcite Powder for the Removal of Heavy Metals from Contaminated Water

An approach for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater that is gaining increasing attention application hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based particles. HAP conventionally synthesized through wet chemical precipitation calcium and phosphate ions, although later studies have focused on synthesis from solid calcite contacted with a solution under ambient conditions. This route can allow saving soluble Ca-chemicals and, thus, make process more cost-efficient. The aim this study was to coat natural powder layer removal Zn Cu contaminated water. For purpose, particles, characterized using several complementary techniques evaluated synthetic solutions. Sorption kinetics equilibrium isotherms, as well effect sonication sample its sorption performance, were determined. results showed particles efficiently coated high capacity in removing acidic solutions, qmax 34.97 mg/g (increased 37.88 g/mg after sample) 60.24 (which hardly varied sonication). mechanisms behind onto HAP, inferred pH changes, relation between metal uptake Ca2+ release XRD analysis, included surface complexation, ion exchange new Zn- Cu-containing phases.
